Power line upgrades that have made it necessary to close a portion of our Red Trail are still in progress.

AEP is widening the 60’ wide right-of-way to a 100′ strip to reduce the chance of fire from overhead electric wires. The strip will be reseeded with a mix of native plants that includes natural grass from edge to edge with a 10’ all-weather stone access road in the center. Plantings support our goal of maintaining a mix of native plants and appropriate habitat for wildlife while allowing other mixes more suitable for recreation areas, ponds, around parking areas, walkways, etc. See more about the seed mix here.

If all goes well, the Foundation hopes to re-open the powerline portion of the Red Trail in the Spring of 2021.

This project is part of a $250 million investment in local infrastructure by AEP. More information here.
