Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps (AORC) Position Description and Link to Application Follow

 

Skills & Qualifications

This position requires the ability to serve both independently and in a team setting. Excellent organizational and communication skills, the ability to operate under deadline pressure and the ability to handle multiple tasks are vital to success in this position. Knowledge of MS Office software packages and general computer skills are required with experience in database management preferred. The ability to recruit and serve with volunteers is essential. Ability to speak in public settings is preferred. AmeriCorps members must possess the ability to perform outdoors in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, insects, etc.), be able to carry 40 pounds and to hike extended distances over rough terrain. Preferred, but not required, to have own transportation and valid driver’s license. Members must be able to get to their various servicesites.

Experience

  • Some background in biology and/or natural resources (college courses or work experience) is preferred
  • Competence in basic computer skills for reporting is preferred.
  • GIS mapping skills are desired but not required to apply.

Essential functions (training provided if necessary)

  • Drive Utility Vehicle and tractor for conservation projects.
  • Operate chainsaw and brush cutter for invasive species management and other conservation projects.
  • Apply herbicides (under supervision of a Commercial Applicator) for invasive species.
  • Management and habitat restoration.
  • Conduct brush pile burns.

Schedule

  • Usual hours of service will be M-F during regular office hours of 8:00-5:00pm. The ability to serve flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is needed. Hours may fluctuate, increase or decrease, in consideration of seasonal changes such as inclement weather or other extended activities.

Location(s)

  • Broughton Nature and Wildlife Education Area, Marietta, Ohio.

Duties & Responsibilities of AmeriCorps Member

  • Support restoration and conservation activities across the Broughton Nature and Wildlife
  • Education Area (BNWEA)
  • Invasive species removal using both hand and power tools across the BNP,
  • including the right of way. (All power tool work will be done after certified training
  • has occurred.)
  • Native seed collection.
  • Native seed and plug sowing
  • Mapping and documenting native plant communities across the BNWEA.

Trail Maintenance Across the BNWEA

  • Regular monitoring of all trails at the BNWEA, removing fallen limbs, etc.
  • Ensuring trail signage is accurate.
  • Assist in bench installations.

Disc Golf Course

  • Regular monitoring of disc golf trails as directed by Dr. Jim Morgan. This includes
  • removing limbs, hazards, etc.

Community Building Support

  • Assist in set-up and take down, and clean up of community events hosted in the
  • Community Building

Other

  • Support other Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps members and their programs.
  • Participate in training and conferences as necessary to increase knowledge and gain.
  • career networking opportunities.
  • Complete monthly activity reports, required timesheets and periodic reports through the OnCorps online system and email.
  • Attend required AORC and Broughton Nature and Wildlife Education Area meetings and events.
